Recycling - easy things you can do

I’m not a recycling freak – we have not reached the stage where we use our peeling etc for compost or recycle all plastic etc etc. We use our green box though, paper and cans and glass – we’re good at those. What I’m really wanting to talk about is recycling other stuff, the not so obvious things. Almost like stealth recycling! (because it sort of sneaks up on you without you even noticing!)

Like taking your outgrown/unwanted clothes to either a charity shop, or if they are in great condition to a clothing agency  like where I used to work( http://tinyurl.com/9238q for a couple of details) That way others get the benefit, you might even make some money back and there is less waste being generated.

It’s also a great idea to keep toys moving – our kids frequently out grow toys, we have a little pool of friends thst we tend to offer them to, you can be really clever with this and make friends with families whose kids are older just in case you might get their hand me downs too! Or, buy them at NCT sales http://www.nctpregnancyandbabycare.com/events.asp?show=nns (where you can sell your stuff too) or in the paper, or via a local site like this…http://www.dailyinformation.co.uk/  or check out freecycle.

There is always Ebay as well, you’d be amazed at how many people want your junk!

Recycling can seem offputting, I see it more like keeping stuff moving, getting the most use out of things. I’m sure there are many other ways to do it.

I don't know why you don't recycle your plastic and cardboard too. It's no more work than taking your unwanted stuff to a charity shop and it does give you a great "smug" feeling! Just keep a box for your plastic & cardboard outside and once every 2 weeks drop it off at Redbridge. Even better, join with neighbours/friends and take it in turns to do the Redbridge run thus saving on fuel (very environmentally friendly!)

You might be surprised at what the council will let you put in your recyclng box- it's worth hanging on to the next leaflet that comes round with bin days etc. coz there's usually a reminder list in there- we manage to fill both our boxes most weeks coz we've got into the habit of pinning the lists up in our kitchen so we can have a quick check before we chuck things. I can't decide whether to feel smug that we recycle so dilligently or horrified that we produce so much waste!
